{"id":87,"date":"2008-10-09T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-09T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gandgmag.wpengine.com\/articles\/uncategorized\/room-to-read\/"},"modified":"2017-04-03T13:01:52","modified_gmt":"2017-04-03T17:01:52","slug":"room-to-read","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/articles\/room-to-read","title":{"rendered":"Room to Read"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For a woman like Julia Reed, who has spent most of her adult life as a vagabond of sorts, traveling and writing for magazines such as <i>Vogue<\/i> and <i>Newsweek,<\/i> and carting her favorite things from apartment to apartment, having her own home\u2014much less the space for a library\u2014is a newfound luxury. \u201cAll that time I was on the road, I wanted to be in a house, a real house\u2014with room for a dog and all my books,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004, Reed got her wish, but the library sits in a Greek Revival residence in New Orleans that\u2019s been through a hell of a lot: first an all-out renovation, then Hurricane Katrina (both the subject of Reed\u2019s latest book, <i>The House on First Street<\/i>), then more renovations, then Hurricane Gustav.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other rooms that were ripped to the studs when she bought the home, however, all she had to do in the library was lighten it up. So she played up the floor-to-ceiling windows and brightened the walls with a decorative faux bois paint treatment that resembles light wood.
