It\u2019s an outright trove of Southern treasures. On a familiar stretch of road, the new billboard caught my eye: In bright yellow font, surrounded by a picture of an ice cream cone and steaming coffee cup, beckoned the words <a href=\"https:\/\/woodbrothersstore.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wood Bros. General Store<\/a>. (Wise co-owns the store with his wife, Morgan.) I thought about all the sporting art enthusiasts who travel this route for the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sewe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Southeastern Wildlife Exposition<\/a> each February in Charleston\u2014they\u2019ll want to stop here to see vintage and modern works from such names as the Ward Brothers, Frank Middleton, <a href=\"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/slideshow\/photos-decoy-ducks-with-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tom Boozer<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/feature\/a-legendary-carvers-chesapeake-chops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mark McNair<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the left side of the building, the Court House Coffee shop poured nitro cold brew, cappuccinos, and classic drip. On the right side was a bit of a construction zone, an area Wise plans to open as a restaurant during \u201cphase two\u201d next year. For the past few months, the three-and-a-half acres the store sits on have been operating as a community gathering spot, hosting group bike rides and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/woodbrothersstore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saturday morning farmers market<\/a> of barbecue, baked goods, and local produce.<\/p><div id=\"div-gpt-ad-2177540\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad mobile inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-4755802\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad tablet inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3636652\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad desktop inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Forgive me, I\u2019ve buried the most important part of this report too many paragraphs down: \u201cWe\u2019re claiming to have the nicest bathrooms between Charleston and Savannah,\u201d Wise says. \u201cEach has a room you go into instead of a stall, and that\u2019s the most important headline.\u201d With brass hardware, penny tile floors, and handmade <a href=\"https:\/\/landrumtables.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Landrum Tables<\/a> stands, he\u2019s probably safe in his assessment. They also ran a construction company and a wrecker service, and in 1972, Richard became the youngest magistrate in the state. Judge Wood operated his court out of the very spot where Court House Coffee sits now, named with a nod to his legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wise, who also owns the nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/south-carolina-plantations.com\/beaufort\/hobonny.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hobonny<\/a> estate, and now lives in Mount Pleasant with his own family, kept an eye on the location. \u201cI always told Donald I was interested if he ever wanted to sell it,\u201d Wise says. He hired the South Carolina <a href=\"https:\/\/gilshulergraphicdesign.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">graphic designer Gil Shuler<\/a>, who created those eye-catching roadside signs, plus hats and T-shirts. My plan now is to stop into the long-running and reliably delicious snack shop <a href=\"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/articles\/i-always-brake-at-this-little-highway-17-pie-paradise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carolina Cider Company<\/a> on the right side of 17 for a pastry while headed south, and at Wood Brothers fifteen miles north for coffee and a bathroom break on my way home to Charleston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But perhaps the biggest stamp of approval comes from the Wood brothers themselves.
