Davis has seen native birds eat them and spotted their webs on the same bush as those of native spiders. Diet studies show that their large webs catch the usual array of insects, including mosquitos, flies, and beetles. And they aren\u2019t venomous to humans like a brown recluse or black widow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, no invasive species is a good thing, and unfortunately, it looks like the spiders are going to continue to spread. Already they\u2019ve been documented in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Maryland, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. According to a metabolism study Davis conducted, they\u2019re well suited to colonize the northern United States, too, maybe even up into Canada.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And their genus as a whole, <em>Trichonephila<\/em>, has a high stress tolerance that allows them to thrive in urban areas. \u201cThey\u2019re happy being in places where no normal spider would ever be, like on a street lamp or traffic light,\u201d Davis says. \u201cThat means there&#8217;s nothing really stopping them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what should you do when you\u2014inevitably\u2014come across one?<\/p><div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1266642\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad mobile inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-7626849\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad tablet inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-8438059\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad desktop inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Well, nothing. \u201cLearn to live with them,\u201d Davis advises. \u201cThey get a lot of attention because they look terrifying, but this is not a spider that\u2019s coming to eat your face off.\u201d He actually conducted a behavior study and determined that the spiders are quite shy and docile. From a practical standpoint, individually killing them or knocking down their webs won\u2019t put a dent in their population, so there isn\u2019t much point in waging war. And the absolute worst thing to do, Davis says, is treat the areas you find them in with pesticides that could harm native pollinators and other insects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, global commerce is mixing up all these species everywhere,\u201d<strong> <\/strong>Davis says. In the case of joro spiders\u2014\u201cthe horses have left the barn and we can\u2019t close the door, so you might as well observe them and get to know them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The long-legged, brightly colored orb weavers are growing more common across the South.
