Each batch is bottled in both a lower-proof version and a higher-proof Empty Nester strength and is named for some facet of his perspective as a dad. The upcoming November release, Fourth &amp; Long, nods to the challenges of raising a big family. \u201cWhen you have multiple kids, that fourth child is when you\u2019re really getting into a \u2018no-man\u2019s-land\u2019 of parenting,\u201d Gaffigan says. \u201cWe drew the comparison of when a football team is facing fourth and long\u2014the odds are against it, but if you can pull it off, you feel invincible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recently sat down with the Indiana-raised Gaffigan in Louisville, where the comedian performed a short run of bourbon-themed material. Over a pour of Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, he expounded on his whiskey journey\u2014which frequently takes him through the South\u2014fatherhood, and the true intent of dad jokes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What made you want to start a bourbon brand?<\/strong><\/p><div id=\"div-gpt-ad-4576146\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad mobile inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-4864232\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad tablet inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-2625150\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad desktop inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Being in the entertainment industry, you\u2019ll occasionally be approached with opportunities\u2014I was usually approached for food things\u2014but I was always reluctant. Then I was approached to do a bourbon, but my experience with celebrity spirits is that the quality isn\u2019t always there. That prompted me to reach out to a college friend who\u2019s from here in Louisville, and he was like, \u201cIt\u2019s a gamble. You might end up with some [unsold] bourbon.\u201d And I said, \u201cWell, at least it would be bourbon I\u2019d enjoy.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m the youngest of four brothers, and the brothers would all come down [to Kentucky] and we\u2019d sample. When you\u2019re sampling bourbon, it\u2019s a labor of love. That\u2019s not to say there aren\u2019t moments where you\u2019re like, \u201cI don\u2019t know how I can discern between the ten of these,\u201d and I\u2019m not as experienced at spitting out as I should be, but it was through that that the seeds of my fascination grew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The great irony of my bourbon journey is that in some ways it\u2019s almost the opposite of college. You go to college to learn, but you end up drinking more. And in bourbon, you think you\u2019re just going to drink, but you end up learning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the most \u201cbourbon-geek\u201d thing you\u2019ve caught yourself saying?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve had to stop myself from saying \u201cjuice.\u201d I have a joke where I address that. People are so helpful in the bourbon industry&#8230;and they\u2019ve been patient with me, because I\u2019m like a puppy who\u2019s excited. I say that with affection and also awareness that I was once a crazy teenager\u2014we all were\u2014and the toll that takes on parents. In some of that initial bonding of my wife and I sharing a glass of bourbon, it made me appreciate and change my perspective on my view of my father and just [develop] a deeper respect for fatherhood in general. With Fathertime, the joke is that it\u2019s not \u201cfather time\u201d as in the time you spend with your kids; it\u2019s the time that a father earns\u2014that the joy is earned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the label is my grandfather, who made dentures. He was the first in our family to break the cycle of, like, working in coal mines\u2014not that there\u2019s anything wrong with that\u2014but his work made it possible for my father to go to college. I like to say that my father\u2019s sacrifice made it possible for me to tell diarrhea jokes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bourbon is associated with the South, but of course it can be made anywhere in the U.S. Do you have thoughts on bourbon\u2019s sense of place?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because I get to tour around doing stand-up, I\u2019ve been able to acquire a bourbon from all fifty states. The thing I\u2019ve come to understand is that particularly in the Southeast there is a shorthand knowledge on bourbon. If you go to a bar in Charleston or even Charlotte and ask for the whiskey list, it\u2019s going to be much more extensive. Obviously, there are great whiskey bars throughout the country, but what people think is an extensive whiskey list in some Northern cities would be laughable in the Southeast. My three brothers wanted to do another trip, so we hit places like Chattanooga and Owensboro that we hadn\u2019t visited yet, and we did it by bus. It also coincided with my son\u2019s spring break, and he opened for me a few times. I understood it would not have as broad appeal as my other stand-up. I\u2019ve always prided myself on having stand-up [that appeals to] diverse ages and mentalities, but this is more twenty-one-and-up material\u2014it helps if you\u2019re over thirty and out of shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is there anything different about developing a bourbon joke? Does bourbon help?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously both men and women drink bourbon, but I think that the male relationship with bourbon\u2014or [being] bourbon geeks, if you want to call it that\u2014is unique. I\u2019ve joked around about this with other guys who are into bourbon\u2014because my wife considers it a kind of midlife crisis\u2014I\u2019m like, \u201cThis is better than having an affair.\u201d Obsessing over bourbon and wanting to complete your collection is, I\u2019m not going to say it\u2019s healthy, but it\u2019s more productive than doing something reckless and more accessible than collecting cars. I made fun of hiking. I enjoy hiking. I made fun of grapefruit juice. I love grapefruit juice now. I\u2019m from the Midwest, and one of those was making fun of all these Midwestern dads who have basement bars, and now I have a bar I constructed. But sharing a drink with my brothers and their spouses in that bar is one of my favorite moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A friend of a friend sent me a bottle of eighteen-year-old Willett, and that transformed my opinion on exceptional bourbon, and then my favorite dusty I\u2019ve ever had is an Old Crow Chessmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What do your children think about your bourbon collection?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bourbon thing is like, \u201cOh, Dad and his bourbon.\u201d I\u2019m into stand-up comedy, and I\u2019m into acting. I\u2019m very into gardening, too. It\u2019s like there are these obsessions that Dad has, and bourbon is one of them. They also know not to touch any of my bourbon, or I\u2019ll kill them. But if I\u2019m here in Louisville and we\u2019re sampling, then it\u2019s a whole different thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Neat, rocks, or cocktail?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m a \u201cbig rock\u201d guy, but I like it neat. It has to be of a certain quality to be neat. I do like things cold. I mean, I look like a snowman. I should like ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your best \u201cworst\u201d dad joke?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the thing about dad jokes\u2014the enjoyment that a father feels in doing a dad joke is the discomfort it inflicts on the child. It\u2019s not about it being funny. Like, eight-year-olds, they think it\u2019s funny. They\u2019re just figuring it out. They\u2019re dumb. But it\u2019s about the annoyance it provides to a teenager.
