In the wake of a grueling year that brought the finalization of her divorce from fellow musician Jason Isbell, the death of her father and grandmother, and more recently a car accident that supplied physical bruises to match the emotional ones, the thirteen-track collection chronicles all she has carried\u2014the anger and longing, numbness and exhaustion, awe and hope. With the support of producer and friend Lawrence Rothman, she wrote the songs for no one but herself, but in their soul-baring specificity they pluck at universal heartstrings. \u201cIt\u2019s not an instruction manual,\u201d she explains. \u201cIt\u2019s a companion if you\u2019re going through hard things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the divorce obviously inspired much of the record, anyone hoping to rubberneck at her relationship with Isbell will find more to parse in her previous release, 2022\u2019s <em>Take It Like a Man<\/em>. As its name implies, <em>Nobody\u2019s Girl<\/em> is Shires\u2019s journey alone, one that finds her digging out of the wreckage. If she hurls a few lyrical daggers her ex-partner\u2019s way, they\u2019re blunted by more wistful moments that together support an idea she posits in the album description: \u201cHeartbreak isn\u2019t just one feeling,\u201d she writes.<strong> <\/strong>\u201cIt\u2019s a storm that keeps changing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1100\" height=\"1100\" src=\"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Amanda-Shires-Nobody_s-Girl-album-cover-1100x1100.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-219258\" style=\"width:816px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Amanda-Shires-Nobody_s-Girl-album-cover-1100x1100.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Amanda-Shires-Nobody_s-Girl-album-cover-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Amanda-Shires-Nobody_s-Girl-album-cover-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Amanda-Shires-Nobody_s-Girl-album-cover-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Amanda-Shires-Nobody_s-Girl-album-cover-1200x1200.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Musically, that storm can take the shape of<strong> <\/strong>a lush instrumental overture (\u201cInvocation\u201d), ruminative folk (\u201cLose It for a While\u201d), fiery rock (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Xxm7mgSgV0Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cPiece of Mind\u201d<\/a>), or an old-school country ballad (\u201cStreetlights and Stars\u201d). In the way she often pairs a tremulous verse with a soaring chorus, Shires can sound a lot like Dolly Parton, though she\u2019s also an accomplished fiddle player with an appetite for sonic experimentation and an MFA in poetry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latter is evident in the album\u2019s vivid imagery (\u201cI dropped my open bottle of red wine in the snow&#8230;Ran out of my hands like it had planned to go\u201d) and frequent nods to the natural world. Tell us about the decision to take the listener straight to the bottom of the well with you.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was one of the later songs I wrote for the record, but I felt like it encapsulated the end of something and also a beginning. The main concepts of the record all relate back to that song. They forced me to write even when I was absolutely certain I had written enough songs already.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Did you have a listener in mind when you wrote these songs?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wrote them all\u2014some in parts and some all at once\u2014as a way of working through my feelings and experiences, and if people want to listen to them, that\u2019s cool. But I don\u2019t usually write with anything like that in mind because I feel like it clouds the creativity or the instincts that come off the page. If you write like that, it starts to dilute everything.&nbsp;<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>One of the songs I found most moving, maybe ironically because it\u2019s about a lack of emotion, is the closing track, \u201cNot Feeling Anything.\u201d Why did you want to end with that one?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, I loop the album, so for me it doesn\u2019t really ever end, it just cycles back to the beginning. But in putting that last, I was saying you get to a point where you are either numb or hardened or in a place of accepting, or a tangle of all those things, and maybe that numbness helps you navigate. And I\u2019ll have pieces that I keep around, trying to figure out what they\u2019re for, just because they\u2019re interesting to me or I feel they deserve further reflection.<br><br>Either way I\u2019ve got to have an instrument in my hand, whether it\u2019s violin or ukulele or tenor guitar. And the words I usually sing first are \u201cmeow meow,\u201d because you can\u2019t just have all the words all at once\u2014you\u2019ve got to find a melody\u2014and I\u2019m not a person that does \u201cdo\u201d or \u201cla.\u201d You know [the Beatles\u2019] song \u201cYesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away\u201d? Those words started out as \u201cscrambled eggs.\u201d And I don\u2019t want that to be any kind of my history\u2014that where there were nonsense words there were breakfast foods [laughs].\u00a0<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What songs from the album are you most looking forward to playing live? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It depends on the mood of the day, but I look forward to playing \u201cLiving,\u201d and I really look forward to playing \u201cFriend Zone,\u201d \u2019cause it\u2019s a little bit of lightness when it comes to all the heavy material we have here. I also really like the rock-and-roll jam \u201cPiece of Mind\u201d because it has blazing guitars\u2014it reminds me of Thin Lizzy\u2014and a good key for fiddles. That\u2019s a good thing about having my own band\u2014I don\u2019t have to play in keys that are sorry for fiddles.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I imagine at this point you\u2019re used to playing very personal songs live, but how do you cope with that? Do you find yourself emotionally drained after each show?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve just had to get used to the fact that sometimes the feelings are bigger and hit harder on some nights than others. So I have to forgive myself if I almost cry, or pretend I\u2019m not going to cry and wince in pain like something happened [laughs]. But I just go through it and do it. If I was to actually feel like I was having a hard time going through it, I would just tell folks, but I haven\u2019t had to do that yet.<s><br><br><\/s>But I don\u2019t find it draining either. I think that\u2019s a bunch of bullsh*t. We get to go through life doing a job we care about and getting to live a life of art. I feel lucky, grateful, and sometimes invigorated to the point that I can\u2019t sleep because connection is a good feeling for me. Sometimes you wish you could bottle that up and take it with you to the many days when you don\u2019t have that feeling.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can you talk a bit about balancing motherhood with all of this\u2014not just the divorce but also the grind of the job? You wrote in the album description that your record wasn\u2019t about freedom, that \u201cmost women I know, especially mothers, aren\u2019t free.\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m grateful for folks like Bobbie Nelson [Willie Nelson\u2019s late sister, <a href=\"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/articles\/album-release-amanda-shires-and-the-late-bobbie-nelson-combine-piano-and-poetry-on-loving-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with whom Shires collaborated<\/a> on 2023\u2019s <em>Loving You<\/em>], who made it possible that we single women don\u2019t get our children taken away because we\u2019re playing in bars. You know, those kinds of things happened, and I\u2019m glad that\u2019s not the case now. Make something pretty or beautiful or a chaotic beautiful mess\u2014whatever it is, you can make something out of it.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Speaking of Bobbie Nelson, there\u2019s just something special about your voice with her piano. Did that collaboration change your feelings about that instrument?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She really had it\u2014the music poured out of her. But yes, I\u2019ve become a really big piano lover. I used to love the steel guitar, but over the years the piano has become just the most glorious thing. It must be nice to be a piano player. Although I don\u2019t envy their load-in.
