He was escorting a group of kayakers down Roseland Creek, a marsh close to Huntington Beach State Park, when they saw a strange, shiny object in the water. \u201cSuddenly he popped his head up, and we got a huge shock when we realized we had been looking at the midsection of a seal. He\u2019d had his head underwater because he was eating a mullet.\u201d The seal wasn\u2019t shy\u2014it approached the kayakers, even coming within a few feet of them and allowing Eady to snap some close-ups.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1100\" height=\"733\" src=\"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6646435299666583535-1100x733.jpg\" alt=\"A seal in water near a kayaker\" class=\"wp-image-219103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6646435299666583535-1100x733.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6646435299666583535-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6646435299666583535-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6646435299666583535-1600x1067.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><div class=\"wp-caption\"><div class=\"image-credit\">Photo: Mike Eady <\/div><div class=\"caption\">The harbor seal checks out kayakers in Roseland Creek.<\/div><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Seals in the South aren\u2019t an unheard-of occurrence, explains Lauren Rust, the founder and executive director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowcountrymarinemammalnetwork.org\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network<\/a>; just five months ago, one was spotted near Sapelo Island, Georgia. \u201cIt is still very rare, though, for such a cold-water species at this time of year.\u201d While South Carolina is at the very southern tip of their range, which is concentrated much farther up the Atlantic seaboard in areas like Cape Cod, they usually make their infrequent appearances in the state\u2014and in greater numbers, in North Carolina\u2014in the wintertime, when the water is colder. Between 1994 and 2005, a study reported twenty-six such sightings in South Carolina, a frequency that tracks today.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the reason for these visitations? \u201cThe seal might just be young, or might be just exploring, or possibly it could be sick,\u201d Rust says. The Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network, a nonprofit that responds to emergencies with dolphins, whales, and seals statewide, has been monitoring whether the seal Eady spotted \u201chauls out\u201d\u2014that is, comes out of the water to rest\u2014and has advised the public to leave it alone if it does, and to alert them. But so far the animal hasn\u2019t appeared again, and Rust and Eady are hopeful it headed back out to the ocean.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe was floating around, eating his mullet and looked healthy when he came close to us,\u201d Eady says, figuring that the seal swam into the creek with the tide. \u201cWe had seen spoonbills, wood storks, ibises, herons, and egrets already that morning.
