Just looking at a thick glass mug fogged with rime right out of the freezer can cool you off, especially when it\u2019s filled with a bracing beer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I was pleased to find a drink that combined all of the above at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ezsliquorlounge\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EZ\u2019s Liquor Lounge<\/a> in Houston\u2019s Heights neighborhood. EZ\u2019s is not an antiquated place\u2014it was a bicycle shop until a couple of years ago\u2014but has already set down deep neighborhood roots with its central pool table and vintage neon beer signs and portrait of Willie Nelson on black velvet behind the bar. Co-owner Matt Tanner says the goal was to create a dive bar that also served great cocktails, the kind of place you might think to stop in after Thanksgiving dinner to see friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Icehouses, where all and sundry went to buy blocks of ice for their iceboxes, were once community staples around Houston and South Texas. When cheap home refrigeration emerged in the 1920s, icehouses that didn\u2019t disappear morphed into convenience stores and casual bars. EZ\u2019s channels that vibe minus the pedigree. That many of the cocktails come in heavy, frosted mugs adds to the impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the mug drinks, I\u2019m particularly fond of the Colorado Cool-Aid, a nod to country star Johnny Paycheck\u2019s popular 1977 song about a bar fight at a \u201cbeer joint down in Houston, Texas.\u201d The lyrics define Colorado Cool-Aid as \u201ca can of Coors brewed from a mountain stream \/ It\u2019ll set your head on fire an\u2019 make your kidneys scream.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"867\" height=\"1100\" src=\"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GG0325_Drinks_02-867x1100.jpg\" alt=\"Glass mugs of frothy cocktails\" class=\"wp-image-213355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GG0325_Drinks_02-867x1100.jpg 867w, https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GG0325_Drinks_02-237x300.jpg 237w, https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GG0325_Drinks_02-768x974.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GG0325_Drinks_02-946x1200.jpg 946w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 867px) 100vw, 867px\" \/><div class=\"wp-caption\"><div class=\"image-credit\">Photo: JOHNNY AUTRY\u2028<\/div><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tanner\u2019s drink came out of a fishing trip he and some friends took to Colorado a few years back. He essentially took a whiskey, amaro, and fresh lemon juice cocktail\u2014a sort of Paper Plane\u2014and made it into a long drink by topping it off with Coors Banquet.
